Artist's Statement
Painting for me is a spiritual practice. Each layer is a prayer, a journey into self discovery. My topic is my muse, that inner voice of sparkling creativity that holds wisdom for myself and the rest of humanity. Inspiration for symbols, colors, feeling and tone are discovered in a shamanistic-like meditation/journey that utilizes active imagination. This processes of working with internal images, even when the meaning is not clear, and illustrating my story facilitates healing in a way that nothing else can.
By working with strong, beautiful, powerful women I am changing the way the world sees women and the way women see themselves. The effect of seeing images similar to what I create is immensely healing to women in crisis, but not as powerful as having them create it themselves, something I hope to offer women and children soon through teaching.
It is my profound hope that creating images of women that speak to their strength, beauty and divinity will have an effect on society. If my paintings slow an abusive hand or make a man think twice about rape then I will be a success as a human and an artist. If I give a woman a better image of herself, letting her see her beauty and worth, then I will feel like I have conveyed my true message and intent in my art.
